Helpful Links for Accuplacer Preparation

Accuplacer Inquiries: Please help us serve you better by sending your inquiries to mathtest@maritime.edu, a system set up exclusively for the Accuplacer exam. To efficiently manage the scheduling process, a single appointment schedule is maintained only at this e-mail address. No other staff have access to the schedule. Inquiries made by telephone will be forwarded by e-mail to mathtest@maritime.edu

Uniform Fitting Inquiries: If you have scheduled a uniform fitting, you have likely received a letter indicating that you have an Accuplacer appointment on the same day. We recommend that you complete both on the same day. If your fitting is at 0900, come by the Hurley Library when you have finished. If you have an afternoon fitting appointment, come by the Hurley Library at 0900 so that you can complete the testing before your fitting. To schedule a uniform fitting or to clarify any issues regarding your uniform appointment, please direct inquiries to Jerry Gohring:

General Guidelines

All incoming Massachusetts Public College students are mandated by the Commonwealth to take the College Board’s Accuplacer exam. The Accuplacer exam is an assessment and placement tool that allows the institution to place incoming students in courses appropriate for their level of academic preparedness.

Students may retest for College-Level Math only if they take and pass an additional college mathematics course. A retest date will be scheduled by MMA to occur prior to academic orientation.

Passing MAPS does not authorize a student to retest.

Accuplacer for MMA consists of 3 portions: 1) College-Level Math; 2) Reading Comprehension; 3) WritePlacer Plus.

If you have taken any or all of these tests within the last six months, MMA will accept those scores with appropriate documentation. You will not need to repeat any tests that you have already taken, provided you meet these guidelines.

Students who score 3 or above on AP calculus are exempt from the mathematics portion of the Accuplacer exam.

Students who score 3 or above on AP English are exempt from the Reading Comprehension and WritePlacer Plus portions of the Accuplacer exam.

Most incoming students will take the Accuplacer test on the MMA campus. Our test site is proctored, and the computers are set up to take you directly to the three tests you must take: 1) College-Level Math; 2) Reading Comprehension; 3) WritePlacer Plus.

You will be scheduled to take the test on the day of your uniform fitting. There will be no charge for exams taken during the scheduled sessions.

The test usually takes between 1 ½ and 3 hours. When the system allows you to use a calculator, one will appear at the bottom of your screen. If you have a documented learning disability, you must provide Mrs. Anne Folino, Director of Affirmative Action and Disability Compliance, with documentation before you are permitted to use a calculator for the mathematics portion of the test.

The final portion of the exam, WritePlacer Plus, must be completed within the 60 minutes allowed by the Accuplacer system, so plan accordingly. This portion will start automatically when you complete the math portion.

You will receive your test results upon completing the exam, and the results will be saved automatically. Upon completing the exam, you will receive a document explaining what the scores mean. The test can take between 1 1/2 to 3 hours.

Students will be placed in MMA courses according to their scores on the Accuplacer exam. Refer to the following list for the guidelines:

Calculus I: Score of 95 or above

Algebra & Trigonometry: Score of 40 or above

Intermediate Algebra: Score below 40

The Intermediate Algebra course is a remedial, non-credit course that must be completed. Students placing into Intermediate Algebra are strongly encouraged to take a summer course and retake the Accuplacer College-Level Math exam upon completing the course.

The Academy offers Intermediate Algebra during the summer session. For information on scheduling or to register for the course, please follow the link at: Register now for Summer 2008 Intermediate Algebra.

Taking the Accuplacer Test Off Site

If you do not reside in the area, it is possible to take the Accuplacer test offsite. There are two options for doing so:

Taking the test at another institute of higher education

To do so, you should check with institutions of higher education in your area to see whether they offer the test. They will charge a fee. You will need to ensure that you have taken all three portions required for MMA admission: 1) College-Level Math; 2) Reading Comprehension; 3) WritePlacer Plus. In addition, you should make certain that the institution faxes the results to MMA at (508) 830-5090.

If you have a documented learning disability, you must provide the guidance counselor with documentation before you are permitted to use a calculator for the mathematics portion of the test.

Taking the test at your local high school guidance office

Some high school guidance offices will administer the test and proctor it according to the guidelines required by MMA. To do so, you must have your guidance counselor contact MMA for the guidelines at mathtest@maritime.edu.

You will need to ensure that you have taken all three portions required for MMA admission: 1) College-Level Math; 2) Reading Comprehension; 3) WritePlacer Plus.

If you have a documented learning disability, contact Mrs. Anne Folino, Director of Affirmative Action and Disability Compliance, who will provide your guidance counselor with documentation permitting you to use a calculator for the mathematics portion of the test.
